The Flordaprince Peach Tree is an early-ripening, low-chill peach developed by the University of Florida for areas with mild winters. It produces attractive yellow peaches covered with a bright red blush and darker red striping.

Flordaprince is especially valued for its juicy, melting flesh and exceptionally early harvest. It is a good choice for home orchards, edible landscapes and growers who want fresh peaches early in the season.

Fruit and Flavor

Flordaprince produces attractive yellow peaches with a bright red blush covering most of the skin. The flesh is yellow, juicy and melting, giving the fruit the soft, traditional texture many people expect from a fresh peach.

The fruit has a semi-clingstone pit, meaning the flesh may partially cling to the pit when the peach is fully ripe. Flordaprince is one of the earliest-ripening peach varieties and generally ripens before TropicBeauty.

Pollination

Flordaprince is self-fertile, so one tree can produce fruit without another peach variety nearby.

A second peach tree is not required for cross-pollination. However, bees and other pollinating insects can help improve flower pollination and overall fruit set.

North Florida Growing Note

Flordaprince can grow and produce peaches in North Florida, but it requires only approximately 150 chill hours. In the DeFuniak Springs area, the tree will normally receive more than enough winter chill.

Because its chilling requirement is very low, Flordaprince may complete dormancy and bloom early. Early flowers and young fruit can be damaged by late-winter freezes.

Plant the tree in a sunny, elevated location rather than a low area where cold air settles. Flordaprince is a good low-chill peach for North Florida, but its early bloom can make the crop more vulnerable to late freezes than some higher-chill varieties.

Planting and Care

Plant Flordaprince in full sun where it will receive at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight each day.

Choose a location with excellent drainage. Peach trees do not tolerate standing water or constantly wet roots. Sandy North Florida soils are suitable when the tree receives regular water and appropriate fertilizer.

Train the tree to an open-center or vase shape with three to four main branches. This allows sunlight and air to reach the center of the tree and makes harvesting easier.

Thin young peaches when they are approximately nickel-sized, leaving about 6–8 inches between fruit. Proper thinning helps produce larger peaches and reduces the chance of branches breaking under a heavy crop.

Watch for common peach problems, including bacterial spot, peach leaf rust, scale and peach tree borers. Good airflow, proper pruning and timely preventive care are important in North Florida’s humid climate.
